The Tarot Garden ( Giardino dei Tarocchi) is a sculpture open air museum garden located in Italy. It is based on esoteric tarot created by French artist Niki de saint phalle in Pescia Fiorentina, Italy. It depicts the 22 major Arcana of the tarot cards.
The tarot is a pack of playing cards, it has been widely used in various parts of the world to play games. At some point in the 18th century, some tarot packs began to be used for the purposes of divination .
The idea of creating the garden came to the artist When She entered the asylum, in the early nineteen-fifties, she was a twenty-two-year-old wife, mother, erstwhile fashion model, and lapsed French aristocrat. Art, she believed, returned her to sanity, and she wanted to make a monumental sculpture garden that would, in turn, heal others.
The 22 Major Arcana have a steel soul covered by concrete with mirrors, colored glass and ceramics.
The figures can be walked through; Niki herself lived inside the sphinx-like Empress for several months during the construction of the garden.
The project started in the late 1970s and ended when Niki passed away in 2002.
The Tarot Garden was a result of the wish to express Niki’s idea of a ‘small Eden where man and nature meet’.
The magical place is located in calpabio, Maremma, Tuscany, Italy. The characteristic village, natural surroundings and long sandy beaches attract thousands of visitors every year.
One of the major destinations is The Tarot Garden which is located just a few kilometers from the ancient Centre.
Niki de Saint Phalle created and personally built the great statues for the garden. She worked on it for over seventeen years in collaboration with many important contemporary artistes including her husband Jean Tinguely.
The Garden was officially opened to the public on 15th may 1998.
The place is a continuous surprise, a splendid marriage between art, nature and spirituality.
It is a magical, amazing place, a small eden in Maremma that really deserves a visit.

Excellent place, wonderful staff. Everyone is friendly and they try to help you in any possible way. The price is fare for what you get. The place is very comfortable and clean. I highly recommend for either a short or a long stay.

Staff were excellent and very friendly. Great to place to stay with kids. When we had a problem with the air conditioning the issue was resolved by moving us to an alternative apartment. Good location to relax far from the crowds but short drive to city centre and beach.
