Diving holidays in Maremma

If you are looking for a diving holiday, Tuscany may not be the first destination to come to your mind, but if you want somewhere that is unspoilt by tourism, then the coastal area known as Maremma is the perfect place for you. Located in the south of Tuscany, this area offers clear waters filled with sea life, coral and the occasional shipwreck.

The Maremma National Park is wild and just the place to hike, walk, cycle or ride a horse. In the open sea of this National Park, and roughly 15km from Marina di Grosseto, there is a group of islets that are in an area of special protection. A perfect location for diving, Le Formiche is home to colourful sea fans, shoals of dancing fish, moray eels and undisturbed starfish. On top of one of the rocks, a lighthouse is visible and nearby is a wreck to explore. It is a favourite of several dive centres in the area so it is easy to join a group and head out to these sites.

Another favourite for diving holidays in Tuscany is Giannutri Island. The water around this small island is particularly clear because there are no cars permitted on the island keeping pollution incredibly low. Diving gear is available to rent from Porto Santo Stefano where the ferries leave so if you are an independent diver, everything you need is easy to locate. Underwater meadows, countless fish and the remains of Roman wrecks are visible off the island making it a unique place to dive.

If you are a beginner and are planning your first diving holiday then Maremma is a great choice because there are a number of scuba schools along the coast. Offering their expertise, many of these schools can offer lessons and excursions in the waters of the Tuscan Archipelago. There are diving courses available as well as full day trips. If you would rather just snorkel, then the underwater views are great near to the shoreline, so simply pop on a mask and take a look.

There’s a lot to see and do in this area when you need a rest from diving. At Marina di Grosseto there is a selection of restaurants, bars, coffee shops and beaches lined with sunbeds. The town of Grosseto itself is a cultural centre that boasts a city wall, cathedral, a spectacular piazza and museum.
