Abbey of San Rabano

The Maremma Regional Park offers hiking trails only, which allow, as well as a full immersion in nature, to visit places from the important historical and artistic value.

The route that leads to the stunning St. Mary's Church Alborense, known as San Rabano, covers a distance of 7.8 km in about 5 hours.

The walk is challenging, but you forget the feeling of fatigue while the stroll turns out to be a back in time journey, until you reach the medieval abbey hidden in the middle of a forest of tall oak trees, which evokes scenes of 'The Name of the Rosa' movie.

A journey in the Middle Age

The architectural complex regained its former glory thanks to a complex work of architectural restoration.

In addition to the safety measures, the intervention brought to light the plant's original construction of the original Benedictine monastery.

The site, which was destroyed by the Sienese in 1438, because occupied by the rebels as a refuge, it was completely abandoned in 500 and became a place of meditation for the hermit San Rabano, hence the name by which the abbey is known today.

To visit the abbey of San Rabano you need to book a guided tour inside the Natural Park of Maremma.

The route starts from the A1 Alberese Visitor Center, located just 15 minutes from the Residenza Principina.
